The Map

A road, thirty stops, and a stone at every one.

Nothing here directs you like a machine. It is a map. You look at it, you see where you are standing, and you see the next place worth walking to — the adventure, the stone, the burden you will set down there. Christian walked it with a pack on his back and picked up a better way as he went. You do the same, and then you walk it back for someone else.

Earth side · the road

Hinds' Feet on High Places

On the ground it looks like a woman walking with two companions she did not choose, building an altar at each stop and putting the stone she is handed into her pocket. She cannot see the high place from where she is. The map does not remove the climb; it tells her the stones are real and the pocket is hers.

Heaven side · the ascent

The same stretch, from above

Seen from the mountain it is not thirty tasks but thirty degrees of ascent, and every law is an attribute of God being lent to her for the day. The road and the climb are the same road. One is measured in miles, the other in likeness.

The Law of Productivity

Day Seventeen and Day Eighteen make up Day Nineteen. Prospects gave her the outlook; positivity gave her the sword. You cannot be productive at all until you have the right outlook — and this is the King and Queen day, one of the most important in the thirty.

  • C · The Attribute

    Cultivated

Ground worked on purpose — a woman who has been broken up, turned over and made fit to bear.

  • E · The Execution

    Excavate

To dig out — to remove what is in the way and uncover what was buried.

  • O · The Perfection

    Outdoors

The open field — the earth, the world, the universe, and every seed in it, all of it hers to work.

The stone you pick up

Moss Agate

carries Productivity

The gardener’s stone — a whole cultivated field held inside quartz, ferns and moss that were never alive, growing in stone.

The adventure

The Long Letter

The Republic of Letters, Europe · 1600s

Progress accelerated when people wrote to strangers about unfinished work.

Burden set down here: Hiding work until it is beyond criticism.

I will act now.

The thing you have been arranging: begin it inside the hour, badly if need be.

Read it aloud three times today — morning, midday, before sleep.

Earth readingOn the earth road this is a stretch of Much-Afraid's climb: she builds an altar, gives up something she was holding, and is handed a stone for her pocket — Moss Agate. She cannot see the high place from here. She walks anyway.

Mountain readingOn the mountain side the same stretch is a degree of ascent: the law of Productivity is not a technique but an attribute of God being lent to her, and the stone in her pocket is the receipt.

The thirty stops

The Park

Every land in the kingdom, and you are here.

It is built like walking into an old village. You come in at the thatch — the commoner's gate, where nothing is locked. The streets teach you the place. Further in are the courtyards where the trade is kept, and past them the great doors, where the king lives. Keep exploring; the map lights up behind you.
