Plato's Republic — the examined life, run at the scale of a home
The Republic is not a book about politics first — it is a book about order in a soul. Plato builds a city only to show what a well-governed person looks like: reason on the throne, appetite under discipline, every part doing its own work. That is the Scholar's question every day: what is governing me right now — and should it be?
Then the cave. The prisoner climbs out of shadows into light, and the climb hurts. But the Republic does not end in the sunlight — the philosopher goes back down to govern with what she saw. A woman reads, learns a language, practices the instrument, masters one thing a little further — not to escape her household, but to rule it with clearer eyes. Justice at the scale of a home.
